The Getaway is a pattern design project created as a concept collaboration with prAna. Inspired by Lugu Lake in Yunnan, China, the project translates the region’s natural scenery, cultural atmosphere, and sense of escape into a series of wearable visual patterns for an outdoor lifestyle brand.

MARK ASHTON

Timeless Visual Stories for Legendary Brands

Outdoor apparel often focuses on function, but its visual language can sometimes feel generic or disconnected from a specific place. The challenge for The Getaway was to create a pattern system that felt adventurous and nature-driven while carrying a deeper sense of culture, memory, and destination.

The process began with research into Lugu Lake’s landscape, color palette, cultural background, and travel atmosphere. Visual elements were drawn from the lake, mountains, boats, local architecture, and natural textures. Through sketching, motif development, color exploration, and repeated pattern testing, the design evolved into a flexible system that could be applied across apparel and lifestyle products.

The Getaway was developed into a collection of patterns that balance outdoor energy with poetic storytelling. Organic shapes, layered compositions, and nature-inspired colors capture the feeling of traveling through Lugu Lake. The final system creates a calm yet adventurous visual identity that fits prAna’s connection to movement, sustainability, and mindful exploration.

This project helped me understand how pattern design can communicate more than decoration. By connecting research, place-based storytelling, and brand alignment, The Getaway became a visual experience that reflects both the spirit of prAna and the emotional memory of a destination.
